THE WEST COAST and adjacent interior

The call of the sea • Want to discover the heart and soul of the West Coast? Just go fishing, writes Milton Schorr.

The way of the river • Velddrif is a place where you can slow down to an unhurried pace. It’s as if the tide calms your mood and encourages you to go with the flow of the Berg River. Sophia van Taak spent a few days adrift.

The Secret Seven • Tourists flock to the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, mostly for the dramatic views at Cape Point. But simply rushing there and back means you miss out on everything else! Rather take it slow and check out these seven other treasures.

Eat the N7! • The N7 north of Cape Town leads you through the wheatfields of the Swartland and the citrus orchards of the Olifants River Valley. Jac Kritzinger drove to Vanrhynsdorp to explore the farm stalls along this route – and returned a few kilograms heavier.

Our island • Robben Island is the sandy, windswept place where Nelson Mandela infamously spent 18 years as a prisoner. First-time visitor Henning Naudé says it’s a destination every South African should visit, even if you think you know what it’s all about.

Waddle we do? • Martine Viljoen is the MarineWildlife Manager at the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation in CapeTown. Toast Coetzer spoke to her about her passion for the sea and all its creatures – especially the critically endangered African penguin.

Roll in to Riebeek! • The Riebeek Valley – home to Riebeek-Kasteel and Riebeek West – is only about an hour’s drive from Cape Town, but it still has plenty of country charm. Evan Naudé met some Riebeek locals who’ll welcome you with cosmopolitan flair.

Salt and soil for maverick wine • There’s a vineyard on the Atlantic Ocean between Strandfontein and Doringbaai, and the grapes grown there are made into wine in an old crayfish factory nearby. Evan Naudé spoke to Jan van Zyl, the founder of Fryer’s Cove, about his unusual winemaking style.

The Richtersveld for beginners • There aren’t many corners left in South Africa that are quite as wild as the Richtersveld. It can be a little intimidating for first-time visitors, which is where Richtersveld veteran Toast Coetzer comes in…

The West Coast Book Club • The authors of four recently published cookbooks share seafood recipes, complete with trade secrets and tips – the perfect culinary inspiration for your next West Coast holiday!

Chasing West Coast chimeras • Forgotten dorpies, distant horizons, salt-of-the-earth locals… Surfer, action-sports photographer and all-round free spirit Jacques Marais went in search of great places to stay along the West Coast and adjacent Namaqualand.

Feed your soul in the Cederberg • While other people long for a house by the sea, Evan Naudé dreams of a cabin in the Cederberg. Here are six of his favourite mountain escapes.

LETTER FROM Goegap • A Namaqualand spring is a miracle to behold, writes Julienne du Toit. And the best time to visit is right now, because you never know what life has in store.
